Patriots leave Goderich Flyers behind in third period

GODERICH – The Mount Forest Patriots rifled home four goals in the third period to pull away to a 6-1 victory over the Goderich Flyers in Provincial Junior Hockey League play Sunday at the Goderich Maitland Recreation Complex.

The Patriots had scored the lone goal of the first period before the teams scored once each in the second.

Nathan Bolger, Michael Stefanelli, Derek Williams, Troy Weber, Luke Eurig and Jack Birkett each had a goal for the Patriots while single assists were awarded to Birkett, Sam Myles, Hayden Coulter, Michael Anselmini, Dawson Bolger, Thomas Coulter, Nathan Bolger, Stefanelli and Parker Miller.

Nick Mandeno had the goal for Goderich while the Trebles, Chad and Kody, assisted on the goal.

The Patriots outshot the Flyers 55-16 and neither team had a power-play goal, Mount Forest on three power plays and Goderich on one.

Mason Kameka picked up the win in the Mount Forest net with 15 saves while Goderich goalie Logan Vermunt had 49 saves.

The Patriots are second in the Pollock Division standings at 13-3-1-0. They’re two points behind the leading Wingham Ironmen (14-4-1-0) and have two games in hand. The Flyers are seventh at 2-16-0-0.

The Patriots are to play the Mitchell Hawks (11-6-0-2) at the Mitchell arena Friday at 8:30 p.m.
