Patriots leave Walkerton Hawks behind in third period
WALKERTON – The Mount Forest Patriots secured their Provincial Junior Hockey League win over the Walkerton Hawks Friday night at the Walkerton Community Centre by scoring the final three goals of the game.
Those goals allowed the Patriots to pull away for a 7-3 victory.
The teams had been tied 1-1 at the end of the first period and Mount Forest grabbed a 4-2 lead by the end of the second. However, the gap came down to a single goal when Justin Donnelly scored for Walkerton on a penalty shot less than five minutes into the final frame. Mount Forest restored its two-goal lead lust less a minute and a half later before adding its final two goals in the final three minutes of the game.
The Patriots received goals from Hayden Coulter, Ryley Cribbin, Derek Williams, William Black, Luke Eurig, Michael Stefanelli and Troy Weber. Chet Philips and Jack Birkett each had three assists while Stefanelli had two and Cribbin, Payton McIsaac and Weber each had one.
Donnelly’s penalty-shot goal was his second goal of the game for Walkerton while Owen Torrie also scored and Hunter Zettler and Trevor Fischer had one assist apiece.
The Patriots outshot the Hawks 37-19 including a 27-11 advantage in the final two periods. Mount Forest also scored on its lone power play while Walkerton was scoreless on four power plays.
Aidan Quish picked up the win in the Mount Forest net with 16 saves while Cam Plante took the loss in the Walkerton net. He had 30 saves.
The Patriots are second in the Pollock Division at 9-2-1-0. They trail the Wingham Ironmen (10-3-1-0) by two points, but have two games in hand.
Walkerton is sixth in the seven-team division at 2-10-0-1.
Friday’s game was the first of four consecutive road games for the Patriots. They’re to play the seventh-place Goderich Flyers (2-10-0-0) at Goderich Saturday at 7:30 p.m., the first-place Ironmen in Wingham Nov. 1 at 8 p.m. and the fifth-place Kincardine Bulldogs (6-5-0-0) at Kincardine Nov. 2 at 7:30 p.m.
