Patriots net four in second to double Walkerton

WALKERTON – Four goals in the second period sparked the Mount Forest Patriots to a 6-3 victory over the Walkerton Hawks in Provincial Junior Hockey League Pollock Division semifinal playoff action Friday night at the Walkerton Community Centre.

The win gives the Patriots a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven series.

The teams were tied 1-1 at the end of the first period before the Patriots surged ahead 5-2 by the end of the second period thanks to three goals in a span of four minutes and five seconds.

Klayton Hoelscher connected for a pair of goals for Mount Forest while single goals were netted by Troy Weber, Michael Stefanelli, Dylan Brown and Ryley Cribbin. Thomas Haffner and Cribbin each had two assists while Stefanelli, Nathan Bolger, Weber, Brody Leblanc and Jack Birkett picked up one apiece.

Spencer Elder scored twice for Walkerton while Jasper Akiwenzie had the other goal. Austin Vanwyck assisted on two of the goals and Justin Donnelly, Brendan Welsh and Noah Rouse each had one assist.

Mount Forest outshot Walkerton 44-20 and went 3-for-4 on their power play while Walkerton went 1-for-3.

David Lobsinger picked up the win in net for the Patriots. He had 17 saves while Mathew Donnelly of Walkerton had 38 saves.

Third game of the series is to go Saturday at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex. Game time is 8 p.m. The fourth game is slated for Sunday at 7:20 p.m. at Walkerton.
