Patriots nipped by Siskins in OT in North’s Game 2

STAYNER – Christopher Prucha’s second goal of the game after just over seven minutes of overtime lifted the Stayner Siskins to a 4-3 victory over the Mount Forest Patriots in the second game of their best-of-seven PJHL North Conference final Sunday afternoon at the Stayner Memorial Arena.

Both teams led the evenly-contested match and neither led by more than a goal.

The teams scored a goal apiece in each period of regulation time. Prucha’s overtime winner gave Stayner a 2-0 lead in the series.

Aiden Doig, Elijah Brahaney and Caleb Cribbin had a goal apiece for Mount Forest while Brody Leblanc, Dylan Szymanowski and Brahaney each had an assist.

Damen Boose and Samuel Vachon had the other goals for the Siskins, Vachon’s coming with 2:13 to go in regulation time to force the overtime. Boose and Tanner Hicks assisted on both of Prucha’s goals while Ethan Allair also had an assist.

The Siskins outshot the Patriots 39-32 and went 1-for-5 on their power play while Mount Forest was scoreless on seven power plays. The Patriots haven’t scored on any of the 13 power plays they’ve had in the series.

Vance Meyer had 35 saves for the Patriots while Sam Hillebrandt had 29 for Stayner.

In the other conference finals, the Clarington Eagles lead the Port Hope Panthers 3-0 in the East final, the Wellesley Applejacks lead the Glanbrook Rangers 2-1 in the South final and the Lakeshore Canadiens lead the Thamesford Trojans 3-0 in the West final.

The conference champions are to gather May 12 to 14 at Woodstock for the league’s Schmalz Cup Final Four tournament.

While Stayner is looking to repeat as North Conference champions and make their fourth appearance in the Final Four, the Patriots are looking for their first conference title and first trip to the Final Four.

Mount Forest’s Pollock Division championship win was its seventh division title while the Carruthers Division champion Siskins have won 11 division crowns.

Game 3 of the North final is set for Tuesday at 8 p.m. at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex.
