Patriots nipped in overtime by Wingham Ironmen

WINGHAM – The Mount Forest Patriots surrendered a goal 37 seconds into overtime to drop a 3-2 decision to the Wingham Ironmen in Provincial Junior Hockey League play Friday night at Wingham’s Wescast Complex rink.

Wingham had held a 2-0 lead in the game before the Patriots came back to force overtime.

The Ironmen had the lone goal of the first period while the teams scored once apiece in the second. Mount Forest tied it with a power-play goal with 1:53 to go in regulation time.

Michael Stefanelli and Hayden Coulter scored the goals for the Patriots while Jack Birkett and Stefanelli each had an assist.

Wingham received goals from Kyle Stanbury, Justin Donnelly and Chase Meurs with the winner. Rhys Vollmer assisted on two of the goals while Corey Restoule, Stanbury, Donnelly and Logan Tolton each had a single assist.

The Patriots outshot the Ironmen 38-33 and both teams had a power-play goal, Mount Forest on seven power plays and Windsor on four.

Gleb Poliakov had 30 saves for Mount Forest while Devon Carson had 36 for Wingham.

The Patriots and Ironmen are to meet again Wednesday night at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex.
