Patriots on brink of elimination after Game 5 setback

MOUNT FOREST – The Alliston Hornets scored four times in the first 12 minutes of the game to start on their way to a 5-1 victory over the Mount Forest Patriots Thursday night at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex in the fifth game of the Provincial Junior Hockey League’s North Conference final.

Alliston leads the best-of-seven series 3-2.

All of the scoring in Thursday’s game was done in the first period and it was the first time a visiting team claimed a win in the series.

Klayton Hoelscher scored the goal for the Patriots while Michael Stefanelli and Derek Williams drew assists.

Caden Maher connected for a pair of goals for Alliston while Joey Visconti, Mitch Livingston and Ryan Sallows also scored. Braydon Hogarth and Jack Beck each had two assists while Visconti, Ben Beausaert and Brandon Smyth had one apiece.

Four of the game’s goals were scored with Alliston on the power play as the Hornets went 3-for-6 with the man advantage and Hoelscher’s goal for the Patriots, who were scoreless on all five of their power plays, was a shorthanded marker.

The Patriots outshot the Hornets 36-35.

Tyler Ryan picked up the win in the Alliston net as he had 35 saves before giving way to Adam Scott for the final 1:06 following a play that saw Mount Forest’s Jack Francis receive a major penalty and game misconduct for charging the goaltender. The Patriots didn’t get a shot on Scott.

David Lobsinger started in net for the Patriots and he took the loss. He had eight saves before being replaced by Aidan Quish at 11:51 of the first period after Alliston’s fourth goal. Quish went the rest of the way and had 22 saves.

Sixth game of the series is set for Friday at Alliston’s New Tecumseth Recreation Centre. Game time is 8 p.m.

If the Patriots win that game, the seventh and deciding game of the series is to go Sunday in Mount Forest starting at 6:30 p.m.
