Patriots open and close scoring to double Walkerton

MOUNT FOREST – The Mount Forest Patriots scored the first two and the last two goals of the game as they doubled the Walkerton Hawks 6-3 in Provincial Junior Hockey League play Sunday at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex.

The Patriots, who had three power-play goals, a shorthanded goal and an empty-net goal, led 2-1 at the end of the first period and 3-2 after the second.

Brendon Aitken had a pair of goals for the Patriots while single goals were added by Blair Butchart, Troy Weber, Hayden Coulter and Ryley Cribbin. Ryan Maksymyk collected four assists while Michael Stefanelli had two and Brock Philips, Coulter, Weber, Shawn Lantz, Cribbin and Butchart had one apiece.

Kyle Somani and Adel Zivojevic, who both started the season with the Guelph Hurricanes of the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League, had a goal and an assist apiece for Walkerton as did Justin Donnelly. Spencer Elder also had an assist.

Walkerton outshot the Patriots 43-37 and went 2-for-6 on its power play while Mount Forest was 3-for-12 with a manpower advantage.

Aidan Quish picked up the win in net for the Patriots while Cody van der Heide was charged with the loss for Walkerton.

The Hawks, who postponed a pair of games the previous weekend including one at home against the Patriots when injuries left them with a reduced lineup, had 16 players suited up for the game. The Patriots had 20.

Mount Forest leads the Pollock Division with a 22-5-0-0 record while Walkerton (18-7-1-1) is tied for second with the Kincardine Bulldogs (17-9-1-3).

The Patriots have two games left before a five-day Christmas break as they’re to play the Bulldogs at Kincardine Friday at 8:25 p.m. and host the Goderich Flyers (5-18-0-3) Saturday at 8 p.m.
