Patriots rally to capture Pollock Division final

MOUNT FOREST – The Mount Forest Patriots are headed to the Provincial Junior Hockey League’s North Conference final after capturing the Pollock Division championship Friday at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex.

The Patriots wrapped up the division final with two goals in the third period for a 5-3 victory over the Hanover Barons that gave the hosts a 4-1 win in the best-of-seven series.

The Patriots scored the lone goal of the first period, but twice had to rebound from a single-goal deficit in the second period to tie it 3-3 by the end of the stanza.

Kyle Detweiler scored the eventual game and series winner with 5:39 to go in regulation time and Jared Rowe added an empty-net insurance goal with 1:26 to play.

Caleb Cribbin, Austin Griffin and Elijah Brahaney had scored earlier in the game for the Patriots while Charlie Mckenzie and Brahaney each had two assists. Single assists were awarded to Matthew Weiler, Cribbin, Brody Leblanc, Bryan Richardson and Riley Torrie.

Jonah White, Harrison Farrugia and Carter Moran scored the goals for Hanover while assists went to Payton McIsaac, White, Joey Stimac and Curtis Arnold.

The Patriots outshot the Barons 32-28 and went 1-for-7 on their power play while Hanover went 1-for-4.

Vance Meyer had 25 saves in the Mount Forest net while Riley McCabe had 27 for Hanover.

The Patriots are to play the Stayner Siskins in the North Conference final. Stayner defeated the Alliston Hornets 4-1 in the Carruthers Division final, wrapping up the series win with a 6-2 victory at the Stayner Memorial Arena Thursday.

Alliston had taken the opening game of the series 3-2 at Stayner before the Siskins responded with four consecutive wins – 6-3 at Alliston, 4-3 at Stayner, again 6-3 at Alliston and the final 6-2 win at home.

Mount Forest finished the regular season atop the Pollock Division at 32-9-0-1 while Stayner finished first in the Carruthers Division at 36-4-0-0.

The conference finals are league PJHL Schmalz Cup quarter-final series.

Bloomfield Division champion Glanbrook Rangers are to play the Doherty Division champions in the South final. Wellesley Applejacks lead New Hamburg Firebirds 3-2 in the Doherty final with Game 6 Saturday night at Wellesley.

Stobbs Division champion Lakeshore Canadiens are to play the Yeck Division champions in the West final. Mount Brydges Bulldogs lead Thamesford Trojans 3-2 in the Yeck final with Game 6 at Thamesford Sunday night.

Tod Division champion Port Hope Panthers are to play the Orr Division champion Clarington Eagles in the East final.

No dates have been decided on any of the conference finals.

The conference champs are to advance to the Schmalz Cup final four tournament at Woodstock May 11 to 14.
