
Patriots rally to ground Flyers in season opener
GODERICH – The Mount Forest Patriots spotted the Goderich Flyers a four-goal lead, then rallied for a 7-4 victory in their Provincial Junior Hockey League season opener Saturday night at the Goderich Maitland Recreation Complex.
Carson Fletcher’s goal at 1:50 of the second period put the Flyers ahead 4-0, but Mount Forest came back with two goals 17 seconds apart later in the second period and five goals in the third.

Goderich led 3-0 at the end of the first period and 4-2 after the second.
Caleb Cribbin had two goals for the Patriots while Jordan Leitch, Josh Presley, Matthew Weiler, Logan Mills and Ben Tenhag had one apiece. Dylan Szymanowski assisted on three of the goals while Ethan Meeker and Elijah Brahaney each had two assists. Single assists were awarded to Cameron Voisin, Leitch, Cribbin, Tenhag and J.J. Lavigne.
Goderich’s goals were scored by Jack Stecho, Iain MacIsaac, Riley Kuepfer and Carson Fletcher while Cohen Lesouder had a pair of assists. Ethan Pearce, Jeff Fritzley, Payten Wheeler, Drew Wilken and Kuepfer each had one assist.
The Patriots outshot the Flyers 35-19, including a 14-5 margin in the first period. Mount Forest also went 2-for-7 on its power play while Goderich was scoreless on four power plays.
Vance Meyer had 15 saves to pick up the win in net for the Patriots while Liam McCarthy had 28 saves for the Flyers.
The Patriots are to play the Wingham Ironmen at Wingham Friday at 8 p.m.
Mount Forest’s home opener is set for Sept. 24 against the Kincardine Bulldogs. Game time at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex is 8 p.m.
