Patriots score another OT win in preseason
MOUNT FOREST – Jack Birkett’s goal in overtime lifted the Mount Forest Patriots to a 6-5 victory over the Stayner Siskins in Provincial Junior Hockey League preseason play Wednesday night at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex.
The Patriots had scored the lone goal of the first period and led 3-2 after the second, but needed a goal by Chet Phillip with just over seven and a half minutes to go in regulation time to force the overtime.
Dean Sealey, Brady Becker, Troy Weber, Parker Miller, Phillip and Birkett scored a goal apiece for Mount Forest while Weber had two assists and Ryan Mueller, Thomas Coulter, Phillip, Will Black and Riley Torrie each had one.
Ryan Mckay netted a pair of goals for Stayner while the others were scored by Matthew Mardens, Tyler Karl and Sam Pink. Josh Armstrong and Pink each had two assists while Mardens and Mckay had one apiece.
The Patriots outshot the Siskins 56-46 and both teams were perfect on their power plays, Mount Forest going 2-for-2 and Stayner going 1-for-1.
Mason Tomeka made 41 saves in the Patriots’ net for the win while Jake Augimeri made 50 saves for Stayner.
The Patriots are 2-1-0 in the preseason with both wins coming in overtime. Stayner’s at 1-2-1. Wednesday’s game was the third consecutive overtime match for the Siskins.
Mount Forest is to wrap up its preseason Saturday with a game at Elmira’s Woolwich Memorial Centre against the Wellesley Applejacks. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
The Patriots are to begin their regular season Sept. 13 at 8 p.m. against the Wingham Ironmen at Wingham.
