Patriots score quick goals in second to edge Wingham

WINGHAM – The Mount Forest Patriots hit for a pair of goals just over a minute and a half apart early in the second period in their 3-2 victory over the Wingham Ironmen in Provincial Junior Hockey League play Friday night at the Westcast Complex Rink.

The teams were tied 1-1 at the end of the first period and all of the scoring was complete at the end of the second period.

Jack Birkett scored the two quick goals for the Patriots and he also assisted on a goal by Chet Philips. Troy Weber and Dawson Bolger also had one assist apiece.

Logan Tolton and Rhys Vollmer scored for Wingham while Liam Melady, Chase Meurs and Tolton each had an assist.

Wingham outshot the Patriots 34-23 and the Ironmen went 1-for-5 on their power play while the Patriots were scoreless on eight power plays.

Aidan Quish had 32 saves for the win in the Mount Forest net while Devon Carson had 20 saves in net for Wingham.

The Patriots (11-2-1-0) and Ironmen (11-4-1-0) are tied for first in the Pollock Division.

Mount Forest is to play the Kincardine Bulldogs (7-5-0-0) Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Kincardine’s Davidson Centre Arena.
