Patriots shake off rust to win in playoff debut

MOUNT FOREST – The Mount Forest Patriots struck for the final four goals of the game as they topped the Walkerton Hawks in the opening game of the best-of-seven Provincial Junior Hockey League Pollock Division semifinal Wednesday night at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex.

The game was the playoff opener for the Patriots who had received a bye in the divisional quarter-finals.

Mount Forest led 1-0 at the end of the first period and 2-1 after the second thanks to a goal with 52 seconds to go in the middle frame.

Ryley Cribbin had a hat trick for the Patriots while Parker Miller and Klayton Hoelscher added a goal apiece. Single assists were awarded to Dylan Brown, Jack Birkett, Michael Anselmini, Michael Stefanelli and Owen Rahn.

Thomas Brown scored for Walkerton while Austin Vanwyck drew an assist on the play.

The Patriots outshot Walkerton 46-30 and neither team netted a power-play goal. Walkerton had five power plays, two more than Mount Forest.

David Lobsinger turned aside 29 shots for the win in net for the Patriots while Mathew Donnelly had 41 saves for Walkerton.

Second game of the series is to go at Walkerton Friday starting at 8:20 p.m.
