Patriots slip by Ironmen in overtime

WINGHAM – Derick Acheson’s goal in overtime lifted the Mount Forest Patriots to a 6-5 victory over the Wingham Ironmen in Provincial Junior Hockey League play Friday night at Wingham’s Wescast Complex.

The Patriots had to rally for the win as they needed two goals in the final three minutes of regulation time to take the game to overtime.

Wingham led 3-2 at the end of the first period before a scoreless second. The Ironmen went ahead 5-3 on a shorthanded goal by Connor Gibson with 3:42 to go in the third.

Mount Forest tied it as Ryley Cribbin scored a power-play goal 44 seconds later and Evan Kuhl hit for the tying goal with 1:37 to go in the third.

Brendon Aitken led the Patriots with a pair of goals while Brock Philips, Cribbin, Kuhl and Acheson had one goal apiece. Blair Butchart assisted on five of the goals while Luke Hoelscher had two assists and Ryan Maksymyk and Aitken had one each.

Carter Collinson, Connor Gibson, Jamie Huber, Kyle Stanbury and Scott Stovel scored once each for Wingham. Assists went to Huber, Josh Higgins, Collinson, Scott McFarlan and Kyle Langlois.

The Patriots were held to less than 10 shots on goal in each period as they were outshot 37-25 in the game. Mount Forest also went 2-for-8 on its power play while Wingham went 2-for-7.

David Lobsinger picked up the win for Mount Forest as he made 32 saves while Wyatt Nicholson took the loss for Wingham.

The Patriots lead the Pollock Division at 20-5-0-0 while Wingham is fourth at 15-9-1-3.

Mount Forest is to host the Kincardine Bulldogs (17-8-1-3) Saturday at 8 p.m. at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex.
