Patriots start playoffs with a pair of wins

MOUNT FOREST – The Mount Forest Patriots opened the Provincial Junior Hockey League’s Pollock Division quarter-finals with a pair of victories.

The Patriots took the opener with the Walkerton Hawks 6-2 at the Walkerton Community Centre Wednesday night before blanking Walkerton 9-0 at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex Friday night.

A game that was to have been played at Walkerton Saturday was postponed.

The Patriots scored five consecutive goals in the series opener to break a 1-1 tie early in the second period.

Jordan Leitch had a hat trick for Mount Forest while Darcy Winkler, Derrick Cornfield and Hayden Coulter added single goals. Winkler, Benjamin Demoe and Caleb Cribbin each had two assists while Christopher Prucha, Calan Tanzi-Foshay, Cornfield and Coulter each had single assists.

Owen Tichbourne and Aiden Mead had the goals for Walkerton while assists were awarded to Zach Turner and Brayden Fischer.

Walkerton outshot the Patriots 50-47. Owen Morgan had 48 saves for the Patriots and Joshua Silverman had 41 for Walkerton.

The Patriots scored three times in each period for Friday’s win.

Michael Brassor turned aside 28 shots for the shutout for Mount Forest while Kyle Rivers had 11 saves for Walkerton before giving way to Silverman at 18:14 of the first period after Mount Forest’s second goal. Silverman had 22 saves.

Tanzi-Foshay had a hat trick for the Patriots while Coulter scored twice and Reid Caswell, Tenhag, Leitch and Cornfield tallied once apiece. Cornfield had four assists while Cribbin had three, Prucha had two and Winkler, Demoe, Tenhag, Adam Murray and Riley Torrie had one each.

Third game of the series is now set for Wednesday at Mount Forest starting at 8 p.m.
