Patriots sweep Walkerton aside to advance to Pollock final
WALKERTON – Two goals in the first period proved to be the difference in the game as the Mount Forest Patriots wrapped up their sweep of the Walkerton Hawks in the Provincial Junior Hockey League’s Pollock Division semifinals with a 4-2 win Wednesday night at the Walkerton Community Centre.
Ryley Cribbin and Jacob Miller scored in the opening frame as the Patriots led 2-0 at the end of the period. The teams struck for a goal apiece in each of the final two periods.
Klayton Hoelscher scored in the second for Mount Forest while Jack Birkett added the third-period goal. Hoelscher, Cribbin, Thomas Coulter, Chet Philips, Jack Birkett and Troy Weber each had one assist.
Justin Donnelly and Adel Zivojevic each had a goal and an assist for Walkerton while Brendan Welsh and Ryan Shaw each collected a single assist.
Mount Forest outshot Walkerton 50-26 and neither team netted a power-play goal, Walkerton on five power plays and the Patriots on six.
David Lobsinger stopped 24 shots to get the win in the Mount Forest net while Mathew Donnelly had 46 saves for Walkerton.
The Patriots advance to the division final where they’ll play either the Wingham Ironmen or the Kincardine Bulldogs. Wingham leads that best-of-seven semifinal 3-0 with Game 4 set for Friday night at Wingham.
Mount Forest (32-9-1-0) and Wingham (31-8-2-1) had finished tied for first place with 65 points apiece, but the Patriots won the tie-breaker by virtue of having more victories. Kincardine was third at 23-16-1-2 and Walkerton was fifth at 13-22-3-4.
The Patriots had a bye in the divisional quarter-finals while Wingham defeated the seventh-place Goderich Flyers 4-1, Kincardine ousted the sixth-place Mitchell Hawks 4-2 and Walkerton surprised the fourth-place Hanover Barons 4-2.
The Pollock Division champions will play the Carruthers Division champion in the North Conference final.
The second-place Alliston Hornets (29-9-2-2) have secured a place in the Carruthers final with a 4-1 series victory over the third-place Caledon Golden Hawks (24-15-2-1) in the divisional semifinals while the third-place Penetang Kings (20-19-1-2) have a 3-0 lead on the first-place Stayner Siskins (31-7-2-2) in the other divisional semifinal.
