Patriots top Mitchell to vault to top of division
MOUNT FOREST – The Mount Forest Patriots moved to the top of the Provincial Junior Hockey League’s Pollock Division standings with a 5-2 victory over the Mitchell Hawks Saturday night at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex.
That win combined with a 5-2 loss by the Wingham Ironmen to the Goderich Flyers allowed the Patriots to vault past the Ironmen and into the top spot.
The Patriots scored the lone goal of the first period and led 4-1 after a second period that included two goals by the hosts in the opening minute of the period.
Ryley Cribbin and Michael Anselmini scored had two goals for the Patriots while Matthew Weiler added the other one. Parker Miller, Jack Birkett and Weiler each had two assists while Thomas Coulter and Dawson Bolger had one apiece.
Ryan Murray and Jake Finlayson scored for Mitchell while assists went to Max Hall and Spencer Dowd.
Mount Forest outshot Mitchell 33-32 and went 1-for-3 on its power play while Mitchell was scoreless on two power plays.
Aidan Quish had 30 saves to get the win in the Patriots’ net while losing netminder Seth Monkhouse had 28 saves for Mitchell.
The Patriots lead the division at 21-3-1-0. They’re a point ahead of Wingham (20-6-1-1) and have three games in hand. Mitchell is third at 16-9-0-2.
The Patriots and Mitchell are to play again Friday at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex. Game time is 8:30 p.m..
That game is to start a 3-in-3 weekend for the Patriots as they’re to play the Walkerton Hawks (4-20-1-1) at Walkerton Saturday at 7:20 p.m. and the Flyers (2-23-1-0) at Goderich Dec. 22 at 2:30 p.m.
