Patriots tripled by Wingham in season opener

WINGHAM – The Mount Forest Patriots surrendered the first six goals of the game as they dropped their Provincial Junior Hockey League season opener 6-2 to the Wingham Ironmen at Wingham’s Wescast Complex rink Friday night.

The Ironmen scored twice in each period including a pair of goals 24 seconds apart in the first two minutes of the third.

William Black and Jack Birkett had a goal apiece for the Patriots while assists were awarded to Dawson Bolger and Ryley Cribbin.

Tyson Koopman had a hat trick for Wingham while Logan Tolton, Dana Smith and Carter Collinson also scored. Corey Restoule and Tolton each had two assists while Koopman, Dawson Fahrer, Chris Adlys and Rhys Vollmer each had one.

Wingham outshot the Patriots 33-31 and went 1-for-5 on its power play while Mount Forest went 1-for-4.

Mason Kameka started in net for the Patriots and he took the loss. He had 19 saves before being relieved by Aidan Quish after Wingham’s sixth goal. Quish stopped all eights fired his way.

Devon Carson picked up the win for Wingham as he had 29 saves.

The Patriots are to host the Walkerton Hawks Saturday at 8 p.m. at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex. Walkerton was handed a 5-1 setback by the Mitchell Hawks Friday night at Walkerton.
