Patriots use big second period to pull even with Mitchell

MITCHELL – The Mount Forest Patriots hit for three consecutive goals in the second period as they doubled the Mitchell Hawks 4-2 Tuesday night at the Mitchell arena to square their Provincial Junior Hockey League Pollock Division semifinal at two wins apiece.

Those goals were the only goals of the second period and they followed a scoreless first. Mitchell narrowed the gap with a pair of goals in the third before the Patriots added an empty-netter with two seconds to play.

Mount Forest received goals from Blair Jenkins, Ryley Cribbin, Jack Birkett and Michael Stefanelli while Blair Butchart had two assists and Hayden Coulter and Troy Weber had one each.

Jarett Bogdon and Ryan Murray responded with single goals for Mitchell while Tanner Hertel, Braeden Burdett and Spencer Dowd each had one assist.

The Patriots outshot the Hawks 55-23 including a 41-13 advantage through the first two periods. Mount Forest went 1-for-5 on its power play while Mitchell scored on its lone power play.

Gleb Poliakov stopped 21 shots to get the win in the Mount Forest net while Mitchell’s Lucas Bain took the loss despite making 36 saves in the game’s first 36:21. Seth Monkouse stopped all 15 shots he faced in the remainder of the game.

The Patriots have outscored the Hawks 12-11 through the four games of the series and outshot them 162-116.

Mount Forest has also struggled on its power play in the series, scoring twice on a total of 30 power plays. Mitchell is 6-for-18.

Fifth game of the series is set for Saturday at 8 p.m. at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex while the sixth game is to go at the Mitchell arena Sunday at 3:10 p.m.

If a fifth game is necessary, it’s to be played March 4 at 8:30 p.m. at Mount Forest.
