Patriots use second-period scoring to take North final opener
MOUNT FOREST – There consecutive goals in the second period sparked the Mount Forest Patriots to a 4-3 victory over the Alliston Hornets in the opening game of the Provincial Junior Hockey League North Conference final Wednesday night at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex.
Brody Leblanc’s goal midway through the second broke a 1-1 tie and gave the Patriots a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.
Thomas Haffner scored six minutes later and Owen Rahn followed with Mount Forest’s final goal of the game 14 seconds after that.
Jack Francis had scored in the first period. Getting one assist each in the game were Haffner, Dawson Bolger, Chet Philips, Francis, Brady Becker, Ryley Cribbin, Thomas Coulter and Dylan Brown.
All of Alliston’s goals were on special teams and Ryan Sallows scored them all – two on power plays and one shorthanded. Joey Visconti assisted on all three goals and Caden Maher and Braydon Hogarth each had one assist.
The Patriots outshot the Hornets 37-36, but were scoreless on six power plays while Alliston went 2-for-4 with a manpower advantage.
Aidan Quish collected his fourth consecutive win in the Mount Forest net as he had 33 saves, the same as Alliston’s Tyler Ryan.
The best-of-seven series is a league quarter-final.
Second game of the series is set for Friday at Alliston’s New Tecumseh Recreation Centre. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
The series is to return to Mount Forest Saturday for Game 3 beginning at 8 p.m.
The other three league quarter-finals have also started. Napanee defeated Uxbridge Bruins 3-1 in the East opener Tuesday, Lakeshore Canadiens slipped by the Exeter Hawks in the West opener Wednesday and Wellesley Applejacks edged the Grimsby Peach Kings 1-0 in the South opener Wednesday.
All four series have their second games set for Friday.
