Patriots use six-goal run to ground Goderich
MOUNT FOREST – The Mount Forest Patriots struck for six unanswered goals as they dropped the Goderich Flyers 7-1 in Provincial Junior Hockey League play Sunday at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex.
Jack Birkett’s power-play goal midway through the first period broke a 1-1 deadlock and started the six-goal run.
The Patriots led 2-1 at the end of the first period and 6-1 after the second.
Birkett finished with a hat trick and he also had an assist. Adding single markers were Michael Stefanelli, Troy Weber, Thomas Coulter and Ryley Cribbin while Dawson Bolger and Blair Jenkins each had two assists and Weber, Chet Philips, Cribbin, Stefanelli and Riley Torrie had one apiece.
Mitch Fisher scored for Goderich while Jack Stecho helped on the play.
Mount Forest outshot Goderich 44-29 and went 2-for-4 on its power play while Goderich was scoreless on three power plays.
Mason Kameka had 28 saves to get the win in net for the Patriots while Spencer Lazarevich had 37 saves for Goderich.
The win leaves the Patriots at 19-3-1-0, good for second in the Pollock Division. Wingham Ironmen lead at 20-5-1-1, but have played four more games than Mount Forest. Goderich is seventh at 2-22-1-0.
The game was the second of five consecutive home games for the Patriots. They’re to host the fourth-place Hanover Barons (13-9-0-1) Friday at 8:30 p.m. and third-place Mitchell Hawks (16-8-0-2) Saturday at 8 p.m. and Dec. 20 at 8:30 p.m.
