
Perfect on power play, Mohawks clobber Welland
WELLAND – The Elora Mohawks were perfect on their power play and only surrendered a pair of second-period goals as they thumped the Welland Generals 28-2 in Ontario Junior B Lacrosse League play Saturday night at the Welland Arena.
The Mohawks scored the first 13 goals of the game before Welland managed half of its scoring.

Eight goals in the final eight and a half minutes of the first period gave Elora a 10-0 lead. The Mohawks extended their lead to 18-2 by the end of the second.
Brett Harrison had six goals for Elora while Sam Dramnitzke, Tobias Wilson and Owen Moore scored four goals apiece. Jonah White had a hat trick while Jabe Verbeek and Nick Aitchison added two goals apiece and Jayden Bushey, Ethen Wellings and Kyle Detweiller also scored. Bushey and Dramnitzke each had seven assists while Wellings and Harrison had two apiece and Jabe Verbeek, Aitchison, White, Moore, Owen Williams, Detweiller and Trae Verbeek each had one.
Sebastien Rees and Dawson Battersby scored the goals for Welland.
Shots on goal were not reported.
The Mohawks went 8-for-8 on their power play while Welland went 0-for-5.
Nathan Whittom picked up the win in net for Elora while Logan Powless took the loss for Welland.
Wellings, who was traded from Welland to the Mohawks last month, got some attention from his former teammates after his second checking-from-behind minor penalty of the game at 3:38 of the third. While he received the minor, a fighting major and a fighting game misconduct at that time, Welland’s Lucas Long and Riley Benoit were both assessed fighting majors and fighting game misconducts while Long also had an instigator major and another misconduct for getting two major penalties in the same game.
Elora leads the Western Conference at 13-1-0 while Welland and London Blue Devils are tied for 10th at 0-13-0. The Generals and Blue Devils are to play each other Sunday at London and next Sunday at Welland.
The Mohawks are to host the Guelph Regals (9-5-0) Sunday at 7 p.m. at the Elora and District Community Centre.
