Premier Varsity Junior Gryphons topped by Ottawa

GUELPH – The Guelph Junior Gryphons scored first, but the Ottawa Sooners came back for a 42-3 win in Ontario Provincial Football League Premier Varsity play Saturday at Alumni Stadium.

Ben Lane kicked a field goal for the Junior Gryphs with the lone scoring play of the opening quarter.

However, the Sooners rallied to lead 16-3 at halftime and 30-3 at the end of the third quarter.

Six players scored touchdowns for Ottawa as Justin Fahel, Ethan McKeown, Ben Williams, Roman Reid, Armando Pascual De La Cruz and Danny Ferdinand each found the Guelph end zone. Jad Olleik scored the other points as he kicked a field goal, two converts and a rouge.

Peyton Garvin completed four passes for 91 yards for the locals while Jakob Tomas caught two of the passes for 72 yards. Johnny Wegman caught one pass for 17 yards and Gabriel Magyar-Santen caught one for two yards.

Wegman had eight carries for 36 yards while Tomas had four for 13. Spencer Verdun had seven for five yards. Getting one carry apiece were Jake Gingerich (seven yards), Garvin (five yards) and Jonathan Grundy (one yard).

Luis Alfieri had 11 tackles on defence while Gabriel Tersigni and Seamus Milligan had three apiece. Logan Clyde and Riley Greer each had a sack and Aiden Halley and Anakin Guthrie each had an interception.

The loss was the fourth in as many league outings for the Junior Gryphons while Ottawa improved to 2-2-0 with the win.

The Junior Gryphons are to wrap up the home portion of their season with their third consecutive home game as they’re to tackle the Essex Ravens (1-2-0) at Alumni Stadium June 9 at 4 p.m.


Regional Rep Junior Varsity

The Junior Gryphons collected their second consecutive win as they handed the Orangeville Outlaws a 27-19 setback Saturday at Alumni Stadium.

Details were not reported.

The result left the Junior Gryphs at 2-1-0 and Orangeville at 1-1-0.

The Junior Gryphs are to host the York Lions (2-0-0) June 9 at 1 p.m. at Alumni Stadium.


Regional Rep Bantam

The Junior Gryphons made it two wins in as many league outings this season as they dropped the Clarington Knights 66-6 at Alumni Stadium Saturday.

Details were not reported.

While the Junior Gryphs improved to 2-0-0 with the win, Clarington fell to 0-2-0.

The Junior Gryphons and Woodstock Wolverines (2-0-0) are to battle on two consecutive weekends as they’re to meet June 9 at Alumni Stadium starting at 10 a.m. and June 15 at College Avenue Secondary School in Woodstock beginning at 11 a.m.
