Provincial Elite Gryphons blank defending champs

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons dropped GS United 5-0 to open their Ontario Women’s Soccer League Provincial Elite season Tuesday night at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.

Victoria Hinchliffe led the Gryphs with a pair of goals while single goals were scored by Abbi Morrell, Kaylin Twardowski and Cassie Wheldon.

Brooke Davidson was credited with the shutout over the defending league champions.

Hinchliffe was the league’s Golden Boot winner last year with 18 goals while Davidson won the Golden Glove award with five shutouts.

Of Guelph’s scorers, Hinchliffe and Twardowski are members of the University of Guelph Gryphons (so is Davidson), while Morrell is with the Central Michigan Chippewas and Wheldon just graduated from the Cincinnati Bearcats.

Next up for the Gryphs is a game against Durham United FA at Pickering’s Kinsmen Park May 22 at 9 p.m.

They’ll follow that with four consecutive home games meaning that five of their first six games are at home. That will leave three home games in their final 10 games of the season.
