Quick pair in third lead Patriots to victory

SCHOMBERG – A pair of third-period goals scored nine seconds apart sparked the Mount Forest Patriots to a 5-3 victory over the Schomberg Cougars in Provincial Junior Hockey League play Saturday at Schomberg’s Trisan Centre.

Schomberg had led 2-1 at the end of the first period before scoring the only goal of the second period.

Luke Hoelscher, Brady Becker, Klayton Hoelscher, Owen Rahn and Jack Birkett scored the goals for the Patriots while Luke Hoelscher collected two assists and Nathan Bolger, Troy Weber, Thomas Haffner and Klayton Hoelscher each had one.

Alexander Cordeiro, Thomas Foulds and Cameron Robinson tallied for Schomberg. Assists were awarded to Brandon Cohen, Daniel Perry, Curtis Dubeau and Owen Heilemann.

Schomberg outshot the Patriots 38-32 and went 1-for-5 on their power play while the Patriots were scoreless on two power plays.

Aidan Quish was the winning netminder for Mount Forest. He made 35 saves while losing goaltender Matthew Lolli made 27 saves for Schomberg, but took the loss.

Mount Forest is tied for second in the Pollock Division at 5-1-0-0 and Schomberg is eighth in the Carruthers Division at 2-4-1-1.

The Patriots are to host the Kincardine Bulldogs (5-2-0-0) Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex.
