Quick pair of goals powers Gryphon soccer men to victory
GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons scored four times in the first half on their way to a 6-2 victory over the Algoma Thunderbirds in OUA men’s soccer play Saturday at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.
A pair of goals about two and a half minutes apart before the match was 20 minutes old sparked the Gryphs.
Evan Dick and Alex Zis scored twice apiece while single goals were added by Peter Zehdee and Mitch Lefebvre. Assists were awarded to Lefebvre, Zis and Mandela Sharpe.
Darlington Murasiranwa had the clean sheet, but didn’t have to work for it as he never made a save.
Emmanuel Aigbukor was much busier in the Algoma net as he made 10 saves.
The Gryphs took 21 shots in the match with 16 reaching the net. Algoma didn’t have a shot.
The Gryphs also took all nine corner kicks awarded in the game.
Guelph is second in the West Division at 4-1-2 while the York Lions lead at 5-0-1. Brock Badgers (3-1-2) and Windsor Lancers (3-2-2) are each three points behind the Gryphs. Algoma is ninth in the nine-team division at 0-6-1.
Zis leads the league in assists (nine) and points (13).
The Gryphs are to host the Laurier Golden Hawks (1-3-1) Friday at 8:15 p.m.
