Quick start gives Gryphon hockey men fourth win in a row

GUELPH – Three goals in the first period started the Guelph Gryphons on their way to a 5-1 victory over the Lakehead Thunderwolves in OUA men’s hockey league play Saturday night at the Gryphon Centre.

The win was Guelph’s 13th in 14 league games and seventh consecutive win at the Gryphon Centre.

The Gryphs led 3-0 at the end of the first period and before the teams scored once apiece in the second.

J.P. Villeneuve led the Gryphs with two goals and an assist while the other goals were scored by Marc Stevens, Josh McFadden and Scott Simmonds. Michael Stevens assisted on two of the goals while Max McCutcheon, Seth Swenson, Simmonds, Trevor Morbeck, Marc Stevens and McFadden each had one assist.

Lakehead received a goal from Sam Schutt early in the second period that was set up by Daniel Del Paggio.

The Gryphs outshot Lakehead 34-21 and went 2-for-6 on their power play while Lakehead was scoreless on five power plays.

Andrew Masters collected the win in the Guelph net while Devin Green took the loss for the Thunderwolves.

The Gryphs lead the West Division at 15-4-1. They’re three points ahead of the tied runner-up Laurier Golden Hawks and Ryerson Rams who have identical 13-5-2 records. Lakehead is sixth at 8-9-2.

Guelph and Laurier are the hottest two teams in the West and are to meet Thursday in Guelph’s annual Frosty Mug Game at the Sleeman Centre. The Gryphs have won four in a row while Laurier has three consecutive wins.
