Quick start in return from break gives Storm victory

GUELPH – The Guelph Storm struck for four goals in the first period as they recorded a 5-3 victory over the Hamilton Bulldogs Friday night at the Sleeman Centre in their return from the Ontario Hockey League’s Christmas break.

Hamilton cut the gap to 4-3 by the end of the second period before the Storm scored the lone goal of the third.

Liam Hawel opened and closed the scoring for the Storm while Jack Hanley, Pavel Gogolev and Alexey Toropchenko each had a goal and an assist. Nate Schnarr and Owen Lalonde also one assist apiece.

Guelph native Logan Morrison, Brandon Saigeon and Isaac Nurse scored the goals for Hamilton and single assists went to Avery Hayes, Liam Van Loon, Jake Gravelle and Matthew Strome.

The Storm was outshot 40-32 by Hamilton and went 1-for-5 on the power play while the Bulldogs were scoreless on four power plays.

Anthony Popovich picked up the win in net for the Storm. He had 37 saves. Nick Donofrio started in net for Hamilton, but was replaced just less than 15 minutes into the game after the Storm’s third goal. Zachary Roy went the rest of the way, made 20 saves, but was charged with the loss.

The win was the fourth in a row for the Storm who are second in the Midwest Division at 18-9-3-4 while Hamilton is fourth in the East Division at 15-18-2-0.

The Storm and Bulldogs are to meet again Saturday at Hamilton’s FirstOntario Centre. Game time is 4 p.m.
