Quick-starting Gryphon soccer men drop Waterloo

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons did all they needed to do offensively in the first half as they topped the Waterloo Warriors 4-1 in their OUA men’s soccer league home opener Sunday at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.

All the goals in the game were scored in the opening half.

The Gryphs netted the first two goals of the game before Waterloo closed the gap with its goal. The hosts responded with two more goals three minutes apart late in the half.

Peter Zehdee scored two of the goals for Guelph while Jonathon Amoo and Youssef Zaghloul each had single goals. Alex Zis assisted on three of the goals.

Sebastian Guerrieri connected for the lone goal for Waterloo.

Erik Hermans picked up the win in the Guelph net.

The Gryphs carried the majority of the play as they outshot Waterloo 10-3 on shots taken and 6-1 on shots that reached the net.

The hosts also got plenty of practise on corner kicks as they took 11 to three by the Warriors.

The result leaves Guelph at 1-0-1 following play on the opening weekend as they had battled the York Lions to a scoreless standoff Saturday at York.

Next on the schedule for the Gryphs is a game against the Laurier Golden Hawks (0-1-0) at Waterloo’s University Stadium Wednesday at 3:15 p.m. and a game at the Gryphon Soccer Complex against the Brock Badgers (1-0-1) Friday at 8:15 p.m.
