Quick starts leads Minto 81’s to victory in playoff opener

SHELBURNE – The Minto 81’s connected for three goals in the first period on their way to a 5-2 victory over the Shelburne Muskies in the opening game of their Western Ontario Athletic Association senior men’s hockey league AA quarter-final playoff series Saturday night at the Centre Dufferin Recreation Complex.

The 81’s led 3-1 at the end of the first period and extended their lead to 5-1 by the end of the second.

Brady Anderson, Jordan Delaurier, Francois Cote, Tyler Harrison and Wade Pfeffer each had a goal for Minto while Jake Pleon and Tommy Hoogaars each had two assists. Single assists were awarded to Austin Gaboury, Delaurier, Harrison, Adam Kawawlec and Kyle Ellis.

Jamie Bennett and Kyle Hunter responded with single goals for Shelburne while Ryan Hunter, Luke Richardson and Jeff Brett each had an assist.

Ben Nelson had 28 saves in the Minto net while Shelburne’s Edward Davey had 26 saves.

Both teams were scoreless on two power plays while Minto scored a shorthanded goal.

Shelburne (17-5-0-0) finished alone in second at the completion of the regular season while Minto (13-8-0-1) was seventh.

Game 2 of the series is slated for Sunday at 7 p.m. at the Palmerston arena.
