Ralph’s Cedric the game saver for Storm

FLINT, Mich. – Cedric Ralph’s hat trick gave the Guelph Storm a 6-5 victory in overtime over the Saginaw Spirit in Ontario Hockey League play Saturday night at the Dow Event Center.

Ralph completed his hat trick with a goal at 3:35 of OT that prevented the Storm from losing a game they led 5-0 late in the second period.

The Storm dominated the early going, especially the last 10 minutes of the opening period when they struck for four goals in a span of just under eight minutes.

Guelph led 4-0 at the end of the first period and 5-2 at the end of the second, but the Spirit continued to chip away at the lead until Brady Gilmour scored his second of the game with eight seconds to go in regulation time to force the OT.

Isaac Ratcliffe, Alexey Toropchenko and Mason Primeau scored the other goals for the Storm. Liam Hawel assisted on three of the goals including the OT marker while Nate Schnarr had two assists and Barret Kirwin, Ryan Merkley, Cam Hillis and Keegan Stevenson had one apiece.

Cole Coskey also scored twice for Saginaw and Nicholas Porco added a single goal. Blade Jenkins and Bode Wilde each collected two assists while Reagan O’Grady, Albert Michnac and Coskey had one apiece.

The Spirit outshot the Storm 33-29 including a 14-4 margin in the third period. Guelph went 2-for-4 on its power play while Saginaw was 2-for-7.

Nico Daws made 28 saves for the win in net for the Storm while Ivan Prosvetov had 23 saves for Saginaw.

The Storm is second in the Midwest Division at 2-1-1-0 while Saginaw is fourth in the West Division at 1-2-1-0.
