Redcoats men take two in battle of top NRU teams

GUELPH – The Guelph Redcoats swept their two Niagara Rugby Union matches with the Sarnia Saints Saturday at Exhibition Park, but the short-staffed Redcoats women were upset by the Toronto Nomads.

 

NRU Men A1

The Redcoats handed Sarnia it first setback of the season by claiming a 35-24 win thanks to scoring one more try than the Saints on the humid afternoon.

The Guelph side managed five tries in the game wile Sarnia had four.

Sarnia leads the six-team league at 6-1-0 while the Redcoats are second at 5-1-0. The Redcoats have a game in hand due to an early weather-related postponement of a game against Niagara Wasps. That game has been rescheduled for Aug. 10.

The Redcoats are to play the Norfolk County Harvesters (0-7-0) at Waterford Saturday at 3 p.m.

 

NRU Men A2

The Redcoats also scored five tries in this match as they downed Sarnia 33-15.

Sarnia scored three tries.

Guelph and Niagara Wasps are each at 5-1-0 while Sarnia stands at 5-2-0.

The Redcoats are to play the Grimsby Gentlemen (2-4-0) at Grimsby Saturday at 1:30 p.m.

 

OWL Firsts

The Redcoats were handed a 45-26 setback by the Toronto Nomads.

The Nomads struck for seven tries in the match, three more than Guelph.

The Redcoats had players away at the Super Series in San Diego and world university games in Napoli, Italy.

Guelph is second in the West Division at 5-3-0. Brantford Harlequins lead at 6-2-0 while Niagara Wasps are at 3-5-0 and the Crusaders of Oakville are at 0-7-0. Toronto Saracens lead the East Division at 6-1-0 and are followed by the Aurora Barbarians at 6-2-0, Toronto Scottish at 3-5-0 and Nomads at 2-6-0.

The Redcoats are to play Toronto Scottish at Markham Saturday at 1 p.m.
