Redcoats slip by Barbarians to advance to OWL final
GUELPH – The Guelph Redcoats will play for the Ontario Women’s Rugby League championship next weekend.
The Redcoats gained their berth in the OWL final with a thrilling 48-47 victory over the Aurora Barbarians Saturday afternoon at Exhibition Park.
After leading by 10 points (31-21) at halftime, the Redcoats needed a late rally to claim the win as the Barbarians came to life in the second half. Aurora took the lead with two early tries before the teams traded tries, the Barbarians shooting ahead by six with three minutes to go.
However, the hosts scored on what would end up being the final play of the game and they won it on the convert.
Guelph will play the Toronto Saracens in the championship game Saturday at 1 p.m. at Markham’s Fletcher’s Fields.
The Saracens clobbered the Niagara Wasps 72-0 in Saturday’s other semifinal.
The Redcoats had finished first in the West Conference at 8-2-0 while the Saracens were first in the East Conference at 9-1-0. Aurora was second in the East at 7-3-0 and Niagara was second in the West at 6-3-1.
Aurora and Niagara are to meet in the bronze-medal match Saturday at 11 a.m. at Markham.
The Redcoats and Saracens met once during the regular season in a crossover round July 11 and the Saracens prevailed 64-22.
