Redcoats women finish as OWL Cup gold medalists

MARKHAM – Turns out the Guelph Redcoats are Rugby Ontario’s OWL Cup First Team gold medalists.

An incorrect score was posted on Rugby Ontario’s website following Saturday’s game.

The Redcoats scored a 50-33 victory over the Brantford Harlequins in the championship match at Fletcher’s Fields.

The Guelph side struck for eight tries in the match while Brantford had five.

The Harlequins had finished first in the West Division at 8-2-0 while the Redcoats were second at 7-3-0.

The Redcoats won a quarter-final match over the Toronto Nomads, third in the East Division at 4-6-0, before beating the Toronto Saracens, first in the East at 8-2-0, in the semifinals.

Brantford got a bye in the quarter-finals by finishing first in the division and then they ousted the Aurora Barbarians, second in the East at 7-3-0, in the semifinals.

The Redcoats and Brantford split their regular-season games with the Harlequins winning 34-27 at Brantford May 16 and the Redcoats winning 38-24 at Eastview Park June 27.

NRU Men Cup

The Guelph Redcoats were ousted from the A playoffs with a 12-5 loss to the Hamilton Hornets in the semifinals Saturday at London St. George.

Hamilton scored two tries in the match, one more than the Redcoats.

The Redcoats had finished atop the A1 league with a 9-1-0 record while Hamilton was fourth at 3-7-0.

The locals had defeated Hamilton twice during league play, winning 57-31 June 8 at Exhibition Park and 48-24 a week earlier at Hamilton.
