Redcoats women into OWL Cup First Teams final

MARKHAM – The Guelph Redcoats are off to Rugby Ontario’s women’s league’s OWL Cup First Teams gold-medal match.

The Redcoats gained their berth in the final by downing the Toronto Saracens 31-17 in a semifinal match Saturday at Fletcher’s Fields.

The Guelph side scored five tries in the game while the Saracens had three.

The Redcoats had finished second in the West Division at the completion of the regular season. The Redcoats had a 7-3-0 record while the Brantford Harlequins had finished first at 8-2-0.

The Saracens had finished atop the East Division at 8-2-0 while the Aurora Barbarians were second at 7-3-0.

The Redcoats had defeated the Saracens 53-41 in league play June 22 at Fletcher’s Fields.

Saturday’s other semifinal played in Brantford saw the host Harlequins crush Aurora 73-32. Brantford struck for 11 tries in the match while the Barbarians had four.

The Harlequins had defeated the Barbarians 36-14 in league play July 13 at Fletcher’s Fields.

The Redcoats and Brantford are to meet in the championship match Saturday at 3:30 p.m. following the 1:30 p.m. bronze-medal match between the Saracens and Barbarians.

The Redcoats and Harlequins split their regular-season matches with Guelph winning 38-24 at Eastview Park June 27 and Brantford winning 34-27 at Brantford’s Wayne Gretzky Sports Fields May 16.

Location of the championship-day matches have to be confirmed.
