Regals down Saints to finish preseason play

GUELPH – The Guelph Regals completed the preseason portion of their Ontario junior B lacrosse schedule Sunday with an 11-6 victory over the Newmarket Saints at the Victoria Road arena.

A strong effort in the second period allowed the Regals to pull away. They had led 3-2 at the end of the first period and stretched that advantage to 9-5 by the end of the second.

The win was the second of the preseason for the Regals. They had defeated the London Blue Devils 10-5 at Kitchener’s Queensmount Arena and fell 9-6 to the Brampton Excelsiors at Brampton.

The Regals won’t play either Newmarket or Brampton during the regular season this year, but they are to play London twice.

They’re to play every team in the Western Conference twice except the Niagara Thunderhawks and Point Edward Pacers. The Regals are to play the Thunderhawks and Pacers once each.

There’s a change in the league alignment this year as the Oakville Buzz pulled out and their players ended up the Regals after the Guelph side announced an affiliation with Oakville’s junior A team.

When Oakville pulled out, the Orangeville Northmen moved from the Mid West to the South East Division and the Hamilton Bengals moved from the South West to the Mid West Division to join the Regals, Elora Mohawks and Owen Sound North Stars.

The Mississauga Tomahawks also became the Mountaineers, but stayed in the South East to keep every division a four-team division. The Mountaineers are to play their home games at the Mimico, Huron Park and Port Credit arenas.

The Regals are to open their regular season April 24 with an 8 p.m. game against Elora at the Victoria Road arena.
