Regals drop Welland with second-period scoring spree

GUELPH – The Guelph Regals scored seven consecutive goals in the second period to break away from the Welland Generals in Ontario Junior B Lacrosse League play Friday night at the Victoria Road arena.

The goals broke a tie and helped send the Regals to a 12-6 victory over the winless Generals.

The teams were tied 3-3 at the end of the first period and 5-5 midway through the game before the scoring spree for the hosts put them up 12-5. Welland scored the lone goal of the third.

Owen Orpana led the Regals with a four-goal outing while Charlie Boon, Julian Siragusa and Ethan Keleher scored twice each. Single goals were added by Dylan Davey and Marcus Keleher who also had four assists. Boon, Marcus Visentin and Orpana each had two assists while Davey, Tyler Beecraft, Ethan Keleher and Zachary Wright had one apiece.

Avery Steinbach-Parker had a hat trick for Welland while Jakob Bomberry scored twice and Hayden Miller netted the other goal. Dawson Battersby set up four of the goals while Scott Streff had two assists and goalkeeper Logan Powless and Steinback-Parker had one each.

The Regals outshot the Generals 61-30 and went 3-for-5 on their power play while Welland went 2-for-6.

Anthony Fonte had 24 saves for Guelph while Powless had 49 for Welland.

The Regals are third in the Western Conference at 9-3-0. Six Nations Rebels lead at 13-0-0 while the Elora Mohawks are second at 10-2-0, St. Catharines Athletics are fourth at 8-2-0 and Windsor Clippers are fifth at 7-3-0.

The game was the first of three consecutive home games on the schedule for the Regals who are to host the Cambridge Highlanders (5-6-0) Sunday at 3 p.m. and Elora Wednesday at 8 p.m.
