Regals edge London to keep eye on playoff berth
GUELPH – The Guelph Regals took another step toward securing a playoff berth in the Ontario junior B lacrosse league Wednesday night when they held off the rallying London Blue Devils 9-8 at the Victoria Road arena.
A five-goal outburst in the first period staked the Regals to a 5-2 lead at the end of the period. They extended the lead to 8-3 by the midway point of the second before London started its comeback with four consecutive goals, the first one coming with three seconds to go in the second.
A power-play goal by Matthew Vilas with just less than five minutes to go in regulation time proved to be the winner for the Regals.
Liam Holwell led the locals with a hat trick while single goals were netted by Ethan Harkins, Gavin Lang, John Lombardi, Aiden Marroni, Mitch Taylor and Vilas. Taylor had four assists while Michael Blaymires and Lombardi had two apiece and Harkins, Holwell, Marcus Keleher, Lang, Marroni, Carter McGrath and Carter TenEycke had one each.
Patrick Hogan connected for five goals for London while Aden Antone, Damon Doxtator and Ryan Hill had one each. Antone, Blake Goris and Jon Perry-Smith were each awarded three assists while Kaleb Fulkerson and Hill had two each and Doxtator had one.
