Regals fade in loss to Owen Sound

GUELPH – The Guelph Regals surrendered four unanswered goals in the third period as they suffered an 11-7 loss to the Owen Sound North Stars in Ontario junior B lacrosse league play Friday night at the Victoria Road arena.

“It’s really disappointing,” newly-acquired Mitch Zulian said. He was picked up this week after being released by the Oakville Buzz without seeing any game action there this year. “We were down the whole time in the second, almost. I think we could have definitely built the lead up there. In the third, we just didn’t come out as strong as we should have.”

Owen Sound actually scored the final six goals of the game as two goals in the final minute and a half of the second lifted them into a 7-7 tie at the end of the period. The Regals played shorthanded most of the second, but only yielded a single power-play goal.

“We’ve just got to get our heads together mentally and figure out what we did wrong today,” Zulian said.

A leading scorer with Oakville’s junior C squad last year, things didn’t work out for Zulian with the junior B squad this year.

“It’s pretty different,” Zulian said comparing the Regals and Buzz. “It’s differently structured and I’m much more happy with this structure. It’s more free and I get to have good pick and rolls and whatnot and in Oakville it’s a lot more structured and a lot more pressure.”

The Regals and Owen Sound had been tied 4-4 at the end of the first thanks to three consecutive goals by the Regals in the final five and a half minutes of that period.

Zulian led the Regals with a pair of goals while Reed Kurtz, Shane Halliwell, Carter McGrath, Liam Holwell and Jayden Bushey scored once each. Kurtz had three assists while Jean-Luc Vereecke and Bushey had two apiece and Holwell, Cohen Campbell, Zach Sanders and Halliwell had one each.

Spencer Elder recorded a hat trick for Owen Sound and Dominic Millman, Jon Frook and Quinton Maddock scored twice each. Single goals were netted by Brody Caskenette and Kurt Long and Mike Fiegehen collected five assists. Maddock and Keegan McIlmoyle each had three assists while Caskenette and Hayden Coulter had two each and Elder and Frook had one apiece.

Owen Sound outshot the Regals 56-55 and went 1-for-6 on its power play while the hosts went 2-for-8.

Cole Martin took the loss in net for the Regals while Brady Lisk was the winning netminder for Owen Sound.

The result leaves the Regals and Owen Sound tied for third in the Mid West Division with 3-5-0 records.

The Regals are to host the Elora Mohawks (7-0-0) at the Victoria Road arena Saturday at 7 p.m.
