Regals leave North Stars behind in third period

GUELPH – The Guelph Regals struck for six goals in the third period as they doubled the Owen Sound North Stars 14-7 in Ontario Junior B Lacrosse League play Wednesday night at the Victoria Road arena.

The Regals had led 8-6 at the end of the second period, that gap getting closer when the North Stars scored the final three goals of the period. The hosts had led 4-2 at the end of the first.

Joel Stevens connected for five goals and two assists for the Regals while Marcus Keleher had three goals and five assists and Owen Orpana had three goals (all scored in the third) and two assists. Aiden Marroni followed with two goals and an assist while Dallon Evans had a goal and three assists. Marcus Visentin had two assists and Dylan Goddard had one.

Tyson Downs, Carter Moran and Dominic Millman each scored twice for Owen Sound and Tyson Morrison scored the other goal.

The Regals outshot the North Stars 55-44 and went 2-for-4 on their power play while Owen Sound went 1-for-7.

Dante Mancini had 37 saves to get the win in the Guelph net while Sam Forbes had 41 saves for Owen Sound.

The win pushes Guelph’s record above the .500 winning percentage mark as they’re fifth in the Western Conference at 6-5-0. Owen Sound and Six Nations Rebels are tied for sixth at 5-4-1. Top eight qualify for the playoffs.

The Regals have a pair of road games this weekend as they’re to play the Wallaceburg Red Devils (4-6-0) Saturday at 7 p.m. at Wallaceburg Memorial Arena and the Point Edward Pacers (2-6-0) Sunday at 3 p.m. at Point Edward Arena.
