Regals left behind early by Owen Sound

GUELPH – The Guelph Regals fell too far behind to recover as they eventually dropped a 10-8 decision to the Owen Sound North Stars in Ontario junior B lacrosse league play Friday night at the Victoria Road arena.

Three consecutive goals in the second period pushed Owen Sound to a 7-2 lead. The North Stars had led 4-2 at the end of the first period and the Regals added a goal late in the middle frame.

The teams traded goals in the third period until the Regals scored twice in the final two minutes to narrow the gap.

Aiden Marroni, Liam Holwell and Marcus Keleher scored twice apiece for the Regals while Grant Patterson and Matthew Vilas added single goals. Holwell, Keleher and Vilas each had three assists while Ethan Harkins had two and Marroni, Carter TenEycke, Patterson and Michael Blaymires each had one.

Dominic Millman struck for a hat trick for Owen Sound while Raiden Medwedyke assisted on two of the goals and Andrew Lavergne, Brandon Stewart, Brody Caskenette, Josh Hamill and Noah Rouse each netted single goals. Mike Fiegehen assisted on four of the goals while Caskenette had three assists, Hayden Coulter had two and Brayden Krueger and Medwedyke had one each.

Owen Sound outshot the Regals 44-42 and both teams went 3-for-5 on their power plays.

Kaleb Martin turned aside 34 shots for Owen Sound while Brady Wilson also made 34 saves for the Regals.

The game was the first for the Regals since the team’s leading scorer Shane Halliwell transferred to the Kitchener-Waterloo Braves to play in the junior A league. He had 16 goals and 17 assists in nine games with the Regals.

The Regals finish the first half of their regular season at 3-6-1. They’re fourth in the Mid West Division and tied for seventh in the Western Conference standings.

The Regals are to host the undefeated Six Nations Rebels (10-0-0) Sunday at the Victoria Road arena. Game time is 3 p.m.
