Regals nipped by Hamilton as rally falls short

HAMILTON – A comeback attempt by the Guelph Regals came up a goal short as they were edged 6-5 by the Hamilton Bengals in Ontario Junior B Lacrosse League play Thursday night at the Valley Park Arena.

Hamilton scored six consecutive goals from 3:13 in the first period to 14:13 of the second to claim the victory.

Hamilton outscored Guelph 3-1 in each of the first two periods before the Regals closed the gap to a single goal with three unanswered goals in the third.

Joel Stevens had two goals for the Regals while singletons were netted by Aiden Marroni, Ethan Keleher and Jack MacAlpine. Tyler Beecraft and Owen Orpana each had two assists while Reece DiCicco, Marcus Keleher and Stevens had one apiece.

Hamilton received goals from Cooper Joyce, Blake Booth, Chuck Rawson, Sawyer English, Winston Bashford and Duncan Carte.

The Regals outshot Hamilton 37-35 and went 1-for-4 on their power play while holding Hamilton scoreless on three power plays.

Dante Mancini had 29 saves in net for Guelph while Karter Rominuk had 32 saves for Hamilton.

The loss leaves the Regals fifth in the Western Conference at 10-7-0 while the Bengals are second at 13-4-0.

The Elora Mohawks lead the conference at 15-1-0 while the St. Catharines Athletics are third at 12-4-0 and the Windsor Clippers are fourth at 11-4-0. Following the Regals are the Six Nations Rebels at 9-5-1, Owen Sound North Stars at 5-9-1, Wallaceburg Red Devils at 5-10-0, Point Edward Pacers at 4-12-0, Welland Generals at 1-14-0 and London Blue Devils at 0-15-0.

Guelph has three games to play in its regular season and will finish anywhere from third to seventh in the conference.

The Regals are to host Six Nations Sunday at 3 p.m. and London Wednesday at 8 p.m. at the Victoria Road arena before finishing their regular season at Welland June 19 at 7 p.m.
