Regals secure playoff berth with win over Pacers

GUELPH – The Guelph Regals clinched a berth in the Ontario Junior B Lacrosse League playoffs Wednesday when they claimed a 16-6 victory over the Point Edward Pacers at the Victoria Road arena.

The win leaves the Regals in fifth place in the Western Conference at 10-6-0 while the Pacers are ninth at 4-12-0 and can’t catch the locals. Neither can the 10th-place Welland Generals (1-13-0) or 11th-place London Blue Devils (0-15-0) meaning Guelph will finish eighth at the lowest and top eight qualify for the playoffs.

The Regals tallied four times in a span of three minutes and 16 seconds to open the scoring in the first eight and a half minutes of the game.

Guelph led 8-3 at the end of the first period and 13-4 by the end of the second.

Joel Stevens and Jack MacAlpine each scored five goals while single goals were added by Dylan Goddard, Sam MacDonald, Parker Lock, Julian Siragusa, Owen Orpana and Marcus Keleher. Orpana had six assists while Dallon Evans had four, Keleher had three, Forrester Bristol, Riley McLellan and MacAlpine had two apiece and Mason Walton, Lock, Aiden Marroni, Marcus Visentin and Stevens had one each.

Zach Snider had a hat trick for Point Edward while Kaleb Edlington had two goals and Ryan Lumley had one.

The Regals outshot the Pacers 72-32 and went 2-for-8 on their power play while Point Edward went 1-for-2.

Mateo Beaudin had 26 saves for the Regals while Caleb Mackie had 56 for Point Edward.

The Regals have four games left on their regular-season schedule. They’re to play the second-place Hamilton Bengals (12-4-0) at Hamilton’s Valley Park arena Thursday at 8 p.m. before hosting the sixth-place Six Nations Rebels (9-5-1) Sunday at 3 p.m. and the London Blue Devils next Wednesday at 8 p.m. at the Victoria Road arena. They’re to wrap up their regular season June 19 with a game at the Welland Arena against the Welland Generals.
