Regals yield two goals early in third to fall to A’s

GUELPH – A pair of goals in the first four minutes of the third period sparked the St. Catharines Athletics to an 11-9 victory over the Guelph Regals in Ontario Junior B Hockey League play Friday night at the Victoria Road arena.

St. Catharines scored two consecutive goals four times during the game and they never trailed, although four straight goals by the Regals pulled them into a tie by the end of the second period.

The Athletics led 5-3 at the end of the first period and the score was deadlocked 8-8 at the end of the second.

Marcus Keleher led the Regals with four goals and four assists while Dylan Goddard had two goals and two assists. Parker Lock, Ethan Keleher and Dallon Evans also scored while Owen Orpana and Evans each had two assists. Single assists were awarded to Ethan Keleher and Riley McLellan.

Christian Lefeuvre and Justin Porga each had hat tricks for St. Catharines while Trent Mooradian scored twice. Ryan Andrews, Liam Dietsch and Ryan Patterson added single goals while Colton Armitage had six assists. Mooradian and Porga each had three assists while Jaden Patterson had two and Andrews, Lefeuvre, Tyler Stevens and Dietsch each had one.

The teams each fired 54 shots on net and each had three power-play goals, St. Catharines on 10 power plays and Guelph on eight.

Connor Waller had 45 saves in the St. Catharines net while Mateo Beaudin had 43 for the Regals.

The loss drops Guelph’s record to 4-3-0 while St. Catharines improves to 3-4-0.

The Regals are to host the Windsor Clippers (3-1-0) Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Victoria Road arena.
