Return of high school sports a month away

GUELPH – With students set to return to high school in just a little under three weeks’ time, it won’t be long until the District 10 high school league’s fall sports kick into action.

Girls’ field hockey will be the first to start league play as the combined D4/10 league is to begin with a trio of games at Ross Sept. 17 with the first game starting at 2:15 p.m. The Ross Royals, Centennial Spartans and Wellington Heights Wolverines of Mount Forest are to play that day while the other six teams that competed last year are to return. They’re the Bishop Macdonell Celtics, Centre Dufferin Royals of Shelburne, Centre Wellington Falcons of Fergus, Guelph CVI Green Gaels, Norwell Varsity Reds of Palmerston and the Orangeville Bears. Those six are to get their starts Sept. 19 as the league has tripleheaders slated for Centre Wellington and the University of Guelph’s Varsity Field that day.

Boys’ baseball is also to get its start Sept. 17 with four 4 p.m. games on its schedule. The combined D4/10 league is to expand to eight teams this season with the addition of the Westside Thunder from Orangeville. They join the returnees — St. James Lions, Bishop Mac, Centennial, GCVI, Lourdes, Ross and the Centre Dufferin Royals of Shelburne. Of the four opening-day games, two are to be played at the Larry Pearson Baseball Complex and one is to go at Hastings Stadium.

Sept. 18 is to be a busy day in D10 sports with three other leagues kicking off their campaigns and the league’s first championship is to be held that day.

The combined D4/10 championship golf tournament is to be held at the Guelph Lake Golf Club with a 9:30 a.m. shotgun start. Individual and team champions are to be crowned in both D10 and 4 and berths in the CWOSSA boys’ and girls’ tournaments will be up for grabs.

Boys’ soccer is to start its 2018 season Sept. 18 with Ross and Bishop Mac meeting at Bishop Mac in a 2:15 p.m. game in senior. All eight D10 schools (Bishop Mac, Centennial, Centre Wellington, GCVI, Orangeville, Lourdes, Ross and St. James) have entered teams in both senior and junior with all playing Sept. 18.

All eight D10 schools have also entered teams in both senior and junior girls’ basketball. That means Centre Wellington is to return after a year’s absence and St. James is to be in the league for the first time since 2014. Seniors have the early games Sept. 18 with games at 3:45 p.m. at Bishop Mac, GCVI and Orangeville and a 4 p.m. game at Ross.

All eight D10 schools are also entered in the senior and junior boys’ volleyball leagues. Play is to start Sept. 18 with 3:45 p.m. games at Centre Wellington, Lourdes and St. James and a 4 p.m. game at Centennial.

Football is to remain an all-Guelph affair with the six Royal City schools in the mix. Play is to start Sept. 20 with Bishop Mac playing at Centennial in a 3 p.m. game. There are two games on the schedule Sept. 21 with GCVI playing at St. James at 12 noon and Ross playing at Lourdes at 3 p.m.

Schedules are not out for the D4 girls’ basketball, boys’ soccer and boys’ volleyball leagues, but team entries have been announced.

The senior and junior girls’ basketball leagues are to include Centre Dufferin, Emmanuel Christian Eagles of Fergus, Erin Raiders, Wellington Heights and Westside while Norwell is entered in senior, but not junior.

Centre Dufferin, Emmanuel Christian, Erin, Norwell and Westside are entered in senior boys’ soccer while the junior boys’ entrants are Centre Dufferin, Norwell and Westside.

The six schools entered in senior girls’ basketball are also entered in senior boys’ volleyball. Erin isn’t in junior boys’ volleyball, but the College Heights Huskies take their place.

The number of teams competing in each league could drop once the fall semester starts as schools find they don’t have enough interest from students or coaches available for specific sports.
