Rocks clout Lucknow to start playoffs

ELORA – The Elora Rocks opened their Western Ontario Athletic Association senior A men’s playoffs by dumping the Lucknow Lancers 7-1 Friday night at the Elora and District Community Centre.

The teams were tied 1-1 at the end of the first period before the Rocks scored three times in each of the second and third periods.

Lyam Cripps and Mason Noble each had two goals for the Rocks while singletons were added by Spencer Gourlay, Bradey Prosic and Kevin Tuckey. Chad Herron and Corey Flemington each had three assists while Brett Coverdale had two and Cripps, Gourlay and Ed Gaffney had one apiece.

Jamie Miller scored for Lucknow midway through the first period. Tanner Simpson and Cole MacPherson assisted on the goal.

Elora outshot Lucknow 42-29.

Craig Byford picked up the win in net for the Rocks while Ben Dorscht was tagged with the loss for Lucknow.

The Rocks finished the regular season 11th in the 14-team league at 9-12-1-0 while Lucknow was 14th at 2-20-0-0.

Elora won the only regular-season meeting between the teams 4-1 at the Elora arena Nov. 23.

Second game of the best-of-three A quarter-final series is set for Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the Lucknow Sports Complex.

If a third game is needed, it’s to be played Sunday at 3:30 p.m. at Elora.
