Rocks double Shelburne to end losing streak
ELORA – The Elora Rocks put an end to a six-game losing streak in the Western Ontario Athletic Association’s senior men’s hockey league by doubling the Shelburne Muskies 4-2 Friday night at the Elora and District Community Centre.
The win was Elora’s second of the season and first since they surprised the Tillsonburg Thunder 4-3 at Elora Nov. 3.
It also avenged an 8-0 loss to the Muskies at Shelburne Oct. 20.
The Rocks were credited with three power-play goals in Friday’s win and they surrendered one while shorthanded.
Hayden Mancini, Brock West, Ben Piluk and Ryan Halbych, who started the season with the Muskies, scored the goals for Elora while Chad Herron had two assists. Single assists were awarded to Santino Diflorio, Piluk and goalie Gary Walser.
Kris Dobinson and Nathan King had a goal apiece for Shelburne while Jake Nicvholson, Todd Greer and Luke Richardson picked up assists.
The Muskies outshot the Rocks 53-33.
Walser was the winning goalie while Ed Davey was charged with the loss in net for Shelburne.
The game featured 143 minutes in penalties (74 to Elora) including 10 misconducts, five to each team. The teams are the top two penalized teams in the league as Elora has been assessed a league-high 426 minutes in 13 games and Shelburne has been whistled for 384 minutes in 14 games.
The win allowed the Rocks to move out of a tie with the Lucknow Lancers for last place in the 13-team league. The Rocks are now 12th at 2-10-0-1 while Lucknow’s 13th at 1-10-0-1, but have a game on hand on Elora.
Shelburne is fifth at 8-6-0-0.
The Rocks are scheduled to play the second-place Tillsonburg Thunder (10-2-0-3) at Tillsonburg Dec. 30 at 7:30 p.m. in the first of five consecutive road games for the Rocks who have seven games to go in their regular season. Only remaining home game is set for Jan. 19 against the Ripley Wolves (10-3-0-0).
