Rocks edged in overtime by Tillsonburg in preseason match

STRATFORD – The Elora Rocks were nipped 8-7 in overtime by the Tillsonburg Thunder in Western Ontario Super Hockey League Presented by Sleeman preseason play at Stratford’s William Allman Arena Sunday.

The game was the first ever game for the first-year league.

The Rocks rallied twice during the game, once from a two-goal deficit to tie it and then from a three-goal deficit to eventually grab their only lead of the match late in the third period.

However, Tillsonburg pulled even on a goal on a breakaway by Jake Brown with 55 seconds to go in regulation time and then won it in overtime on a goal by Brayden Roberts.

Tillsonburg led 2-1 at the end of the first period and 6-4 after the second.

Tye Campbell and Spencer Gourlay scored twice each for Elora while single goals were added by Yianni Stropoulos, Alex Uttley and Jacob Black. Corey Flemington assisted on two of the goals while Luke Hoelscher, Campbell, Shaun Pickering, Chad Herron and Mason Sinkeldam each had one assist.

Ed Davey and Colin Dunne shared the goaltending chores and each yielded four goals.

Next game for the Rocks is their season opener Oct. 2 against the Alvinston Killer Bees at the Brooke-Alvinston-Inwood Community Centre Complex. Game time is 8 p.m.
