Rocks fall behind early, clouted by Saugeen Shores

PORT ELGIN – The Elora Rocks surrendered four goals in the first period in a 7-1 loss to the Saugeen Shores Winterhawks in Western Ontario Athletic Association senior AA men’s hockey league play Friday night.

Those were the only goals of the first period and the hosts led 6-1 after the second.

Lyam Cripps had the lone goal for Elora.

Mike Rocca tallied twice for Saugeen Shores while single goals were added by Connor Patton, Michael Johnstone, Bryan Kazarian, Miles Maclean and Josh Deyell.

The Rocks (9-10-1-0) are tied with the Huron East Centenaires (9-9-1-0) for ninth in the 14-team league and Huron East has a game in hand. Saugeen Shores (13-5-0-1) is tied with the Durham Thundercats (12-4-1-2) for third.

Top eight advance to the AA playoffs while the bottom six will participate in the A playoffs.

With two games to play, the highest the Rocks can finish is sixth. They’re to play the Mapleton-Minto 81’s (9-7-2-1) at the Palmerston arena Jan. 20 at 2 p.m. and host the Tavistock Royals (10-6-1-0) Jan. 25 at 8:30 p.m. at the Elora and District Community Centre.
