Rocks get on a roll early for triumph over Shelburne
SHELBURNE – The Elora Rocks scored three times in the first period to start on their way to a 5-1 victory over the Shelburne Muskies in Western Ontario Athletic Association senior men’s hockey play Friday night at the Centre Dufferin Recreation Complex.
The Rocks led 3-1 at the end of the first period before scoring once in each of the second and third periods.
Nate King connected for the lone goal for Shelburne at 17:05 of the first period before the Rocks regained their three-goal advantage on a Spencer Gourlay goal 36 seconds later.
Gourlay scored twice in the game while the other Elora goals were netted by Chris Martin, Brett Coverdale and Klayton Hoelscher. Shawn Lantz had three assists while Hoelscher had two and Gourlay, Mark Rozak, Ed Gaffney, Coverdale and Corey Flemington had one apiece.
Jamie Bennett and Luke Richardson assisted on King’s goal for Shelburne.
Colin Dunne picked up the win in net for the Rocks while Edward Davey took the loss for the Muskies.
The Rocks were 2-for-7 on their power play while Shelburne was scoreless on five power plays.
Elora is ninth in the 14-team league with a 5-6-0-1 record while Shelburne is tied for third at 10-3-0-0.
The Rocks are to play the 14th-place Shallow Lake Crushers (0-11-0-0) Saturday at 5:30 p.m. at the Shallow Lake and District Community Centre.
