Rocks net final three goals of game to take playoff opener

ALVINSTON – The defending champion Elora Rocks needed to score the final three goals of the game to claim a 5-4 victory over the Alvinston Killer Bees in the opening game of their best-of-five WOSHL quarter-final playoff series Saturday at the Brooke-Alvinston-Inwood Community Centre Complex.

The game was to be the second game of the series, but became the opener when the quarter-final’s scheduled first game in Elora Friday night was postponed due to the snowstorm.

The Rocks never led in Saturday’s game until Zack Cameron scored the winner with 1:19 to play.

Alvinston led 2-1 at the end of the first period and 4-3 after the second.

Cameron started Elora’s comeback with his first goal of the game with 2:10 to go in the second period. Alex Uttley tied it with a power-play goal at 11:56 of the second.

Steven Dol and Brendan Woods scored the other goals for the Rocks while Cameron had two assists and Mike Giacometti, Luke Hoelscher, Blaize Bridges, Woods, Uttley and Andrew Brubacher each had one.

Tyler Winquist tallied twice for the Killer Bees while Bayly Fryfogle and Brandon Ritchie netted single goals. Cam Welch assisted on three of the goals while single assists were awarded to Winquist, Fryfogle, Carter Wright, Kier Cumming and Cam Rombouts.

The Rocks outshot Alvinston 37-31 thanks to a 15-8 advantage in the third period.

Anthony Marshall had 27 saves for the Rocks while Nolan DeKoning had 32 for Alvinston.

Second game of the series is to go Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex in Fergus. Third game is slated for Friday at 8:30 p.m. at the Elora and District Community Centre.
